On June 7th 2020, a new King or Oniru was installed for the vacant throne of Iru or Iruland in Lagos state, Nigeria. Iruland or Iru is a traditional kingdom in Lagos state, Nigeria that is recognised by the government. It is the home of the famous affluent neighbourhood of Victoria island. The King’s title in local language is Oniru.
The late King was Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru, the 15th king on the throne. He died at the age of 82 after a short illness. He also was the father of the popular Nigerian radio personality ‘Toolz’ Tolu Oniru Demuren.
The throne has therefore been vacant since September 2019 after the death of the late King. However early June the governor of Lagos state announced the successor. Unlike the European monarchies that follow monarch to child succession, most Nigerian royal kingdoms and Emirates follow an elective approach to appointing a King. The potential heirs however must be princes of the Royal blood.
The successor is prince Gbolahan Lawal who was the state commissioner for agriculture. The 50 year old is married to Maryam Lawal with children. He took office on 7th june 2020 and took the title HM King /Oniru Oba Abdul-Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II.
The installation was attended mostly by Lagos state kings such as :
- King /oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos, Nigeria
- King / Elegushi Oba Saheed Elegushi Kunsela iii of Ikate, Nigeria
- Chief Akinsiku of Lagos
Long live the king!
