The throne has therefore been vacant since September 2019 after the death of the late King. However early June the governor of Lagos state announced the successor. Unlike the European monarchies that follow monarch to child succession, most Nigerian royal kingdoms and Emirates follow an elective approach to appointing a King. The potential heirs however must be princes of the Royal blood.
The successor is prince Gbolahan Lawal who was the state commissioner for agriculture. The 50 year old is married to Maryam Lawal with children. He took office on 7th june 2020 and took the title HM King /Oniru Oba Abdul-Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II.
The installation was attended mostly by Lagos state kings such as :
- King /oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos, Nigeria
- King / Elegushi Oba Saheed Elegushi Kunsela iii of Ikate, Nigeria
- Chief Akinsiku of Lagos
Long live the king!
