Madam Ella Koblo Gulama, a royal monarch and Africa’s first female cabinet minister

Paramount chief /Queen /Monarch Madam Ella Koblo Gulama of Kaiyamba, Sierra Leone.(1921-2006)

She succeded her late father as monarch after battling it with 15 men for the throne. She was the the first woman Cabinet minister in sub saharan Africa. She also was the first woman to be elected a member of Parliament both in Sierra Leone and sub saharan Africa.

She married paramount chief /monarch Bai Koblo Pathbana ii of Marampa, Masimera becoming consort. She received MBE in 1959 and OBE in 1966 from Queen Elizabeth.

She was arrested and imprisoned for 33 months for treason allegations but was later released and regained her throne back and became Sierra Leone most accomplished state woman.

Her sons Francis Kabia and soccoh Kabia who have followed their mother’s footsteps
