Dynastic royal marriage or wedding is a marriage between members of two royal houses or dynasties.
Several dynastic royal marriages have happened before colonialism and in modern times. Below is a list of dynast royal weddings in African royal houses and other royal weddings
King (Omukama) Solomon Iguru i of Bunyoro kitara kingdom, Uganda 2002
HM King (Omukama) Solomon Iguru i of Bunyoro kitara kingdom married a princess of Tooro Kingdom, Uganda in 2002. She became the Queen or Omugo Margaret Adyeri of Bunyoro Kitara kingdom, Uganda.
Together they have two children.
King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu of Zulu kingdom, South Africa 1977
HM King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu of Zulu kingdom, South Africa married Princess Mantfombi Dlamini of Eswatini formerly Swaziland in 1977. Princess Mantfombi Dlamini is the daughter of late HM King Sobhuza ii of Eswatini then Swaziland and sister to current King Mswati iii. The condition of her marriage was that she becomes the great wife of the king. Her sons, therefore, are highly eligible and possibly the next king of the Zulu. Together they have the following children; King Misuzulu Zulu, Prince Bambindlovu Zulu, Princess Ntandoyesizwe Zulu, Princess Bukhosibemvelo Zulu, Princess Nomkhosi Zulu, Prince Lungelo Zulu, Prince Mandlesizwe Zulu, Prince Simengaye Zulu.
Late King Maxhoba Sandile of Rharhabe, South Africa and Princess Nomusa Zulu later Queen regent Noloyiso Sandile
King Maxhoba Sandile married Princess Nomusa Zulu of the Zulu royal family in 1988. She was the daughter of the late King Cyprian Bhekuzulu and a sister to the late King Goodwill Kabhekuzulu. She was addressed by her praise name Queen Noloyiso Sandile Aah Noloyiso. She served as regent from 2011-2020. King Maxhoba died in 2011 while Queen Noloyiso in 2020. Together they have two children including King Jonguxolo kaSandile
Princess Aida Desta of Ethiopia and Leul Ras Mengesha Seyoum of Tigray royal house
HIH Princess Aida Desta of Ethiopia (Solomonic or shoa dynasty) and HH Leul Ras Mengesha Seyoum, heir and prince of Western Tigray royal house that ruled Tigray kingdom before merged to Ethiopia. Princess Aida Desta was the eldest granddaughter of HIM Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia through his eldest daughter Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. The princess often accompanied her grandfather the emperor Haile Selassie abroad as his companion. She died in 2013. Leul Ras Mengesha Seyoum is the heir and prince of the Western Tigray royal house that ruled the Tigray kingdom before it was merged with Ethiopia. He is also the great-grandson of Emperor Yohannes iv of Ethiopia. He previously served in various royal positions before the abolition of the Ethiopian monarchy. He was appointed to the national Reconciliation commission and is the senior-most elder prince of Ethiopia after the crown prince. They have 7 children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen of Ethiopia and Princess Wolete Israel Seyoum of Western Tigray royal house
HIH Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen of Ethiopia (Solomonic or shoa dynasty) (later HIM Emperor in exile Amha Selassie of Ethiopia) married Princess Wolete Israel Seyoum of Western Tigray royal house that ruled Tigray kingdom before it was merged with Ethiopia. The arranged marriage occurred in 1931 and divorced in 1941 having one daughter HIH Princess Ijigayehu Amha Selassie. Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen was the eldest son of HIM Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and Empress Menen Asfaw. Princess Wolete Israel Seyoum was the daughter of Prince Seyoum Mengesha, head of the Western Tigray royal house. She was sister to Leul Ras Prince Mengesha Seyoum and great granddaughter of Emperor Yohannes iv of Ethiopia.
King Makhosoke ii Mabhena of Ndebele Kingdom, South Africa and Princess Sekhothali Seeiso of Lesotho
HM King (Ingwenyama) Makhosoke ii Mabhena of Ndebele Kingdom, South Africa and HRH Princess Sekhothali Seeiso of Lesotho now HM Queen (Indlovukazi) Sekhothali Mabhena. This is the most recent dynastic royal intermarriage in southern Africa. They married in November 2019 with two ceremonies. The purple church royal wedding was held in Lesotho and a party at the Maseru Royal Palace while the second and traditional ceremony was held in Ndebele Kingdom, South Africa. King Makhosoke ii Mabhena of Ndebele is the son of late King Mbongo ii who reigned from 1960 to 1986. He has been King since 1986 and has 3 daughters from previous relationships. Princess Sekhothali Seeiso of Lesotho is the daughter of Prince Masupha Seeiso of Lesotho, younger brother of late King Moshoeshoe ii of Lesotho. The Princess is the first cousin of HM King Letsie iii of Lesotho and Prince Seeiso Bereng Seeiso.
Princess Zenebework Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and dezajmatch Haile Selassie Gugsa of Eastern Tigray royal house
HIH Princess Zenebework Haile Selassie of Ethiopia (Solomonic or shoa dynasty) and dezajmatch Haile Selassie Gugsa of Eastern Tigray royal house. This arranged marriage of the 14 yr old daughter of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and 25yr old noble was supposed to cement the relationship between the Tigray houses and the shoa royal line. Sadly it ended when the princess died aged 16 allegedly of mistreatment from her husbands family. Her father the emperor was angry that he took her body back to Addis Ababa to be buried in the family’s tomb rather than her husband. Dezajmatch Haile Selassie Gugsa later supported the Italians against his own father in law after the strained relationship. He was labelled a traitor after the Italians were defeated by Ethiopia and sentenced to death but pardoned to life sentence by the emperor. He died in 1985 still labelled a traitor by the dictator government after falling of the monarchy
Princess Ntandoyesizwe Zulu of Zulu, South Africa and Prince Oupa Moilwa of Bahurutse
HRH Princess Ntandoyesizwe Zulu of Zulu kingdom, South Africa and late Prince Oupa Moilwa, Moilwa royal clan of Bahurutse tribe, 2002. This royal marriage was described as the first between a Zulu royal and a royal who is not of Nguni speaking tribes. The princess is the daughter of King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu of the Zulu kingdom and Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu. Prince Oupa Moilwa died in 2010 of cancer. A tournament is named in his honour.
King Langalibalele ii of Hlubi, South Africa and princess Phumzile of Eswatini formerly swaziland, 1976
Current King Langalibalele ii of the Hlubi tribe of South Africa married Princess Phumzile of Eswatini formerly Swaziland in 1976 in a traditional wedding. Now called Queen Phumzile Mzamose she is the granddaughter of King Sobhuza II. They have four children.
Olu Atuwatse III Tsola Emiko of Warri kingdom, Nigeria
King (Olu) Atuwatse III Tsola Emiko (UtieyinoriTsetsola Emiko) is the King (Olu) of Warri kingdom, Nigeria (Itsekiri ethnic group). Tsola Emiko is the son of the late King (Olu) Ogiame Atuwatse II who reigned from 1987-2015. He married Ivie Emiko, daughter of billionaire captain Honsa Okunbo in 2014 and they have three children.
Crown Prince Ibiso Aboko Omoni of Ke kingdom, Nigeria
Crown Prince Ibiso Aboko Omoni is the first son of HM Amayanabo (King) Agolia Cookey Aboko Omoni XIII of Ke kingdom, Rivers state, Nigeria. He married in 2014 in a series of traditional and white weddings and is blessed with two children.
