SULTANS OF CHAD || SULTANS DE TCHAD

Chad is a republic country found in North Central Africa region. It is today a republic however it has a had a long history of powerful kingdoms or sultanates precolonial like the Barguimi, Kanem Bornu among others. These kingdom or sultanates exist today in traditional capacity and new monarchs are always crowned once a previous monarch passes on. Due to Islamic influence, these monarchs are now known as SULTANS but have their specific titles in local languages. These ” chiefs” as the government calls them now are members of the High council of Autonomous Communities and Traditional Chiefdoms

The High Council of Autonomous Communities and Traditional Chiefdoms (HCCACT) is a Chadian advisory body whose mission is to make observations and proposals on the policy of decentralization, regional planning and especially the questions of traditional chiefdoms . It was created during the National Forum held in March 2018and composed of the 51 senior councilors designated 2 by decree no . 1805 of the November 21, 2018.

Sultan (Mbang) of Char-Baguirmi

Sultan (Mbang) Hadji Woli Mahamat is the current reigning sultan of Barguimi also known as Char Barguimi. Barguimi was once a powerful kingdom/sultanate ruled by a monarch locally called Mbang of the Bargimi people.

He sultan is part of national advisers, representatives of Chad in the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. He awarded former first lady Hinda Deby with the title maguira koungue Mbang which means mother of the Mbang sultanate.

Sultan (Kolak) of Wadai / Ouaddai

Sultan (Kolak) Cherif Abdelhadi Mahadi is the current reigning sultan of Ouaddai or Dar Ouaddai since 2019.

Ouaddai / Wadai was a empire or sulatanate located in Chad. Today it still exists traditionally ruled by a monarch locally called Kolak.

Royal capital is at Abeche and fromerly was at Ouara which is now a heritage site.

Sultan of Kanem

Sultan Mouta Ali Zezerti is the current sultan of Kanem in Chad, he succeded his late father Sultan Alifa Ali Zezerti in 2010. He is marrid to the daughter of the Shehu of Borno, Nigeria

Kanem is inhabited by the Kanembou people of Chad and Nigeria. It was once a powerful empire known as Kanem -Bornu Empire now ruled traditionally by Shehu of Borno who lives in Nigeria while the Chad side by the Sultan of Kanem.

The Royal capital is at Mao thus sometimes known as Sultan of Mao or Sultan of Kanem Mao

Sultan of N’djamena

Sultan Mahamat Idjilé Kachallah Kasser is the current reigning sultan of N’djamena since December 2021 after the death of his father late Kachallah Mahamat Kasser.

Holder of a master’s degree in political science, Mohamad Mohamad Kachallah Kasser is an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and International Cooperation.

N’djamena is the capital city of Chad

Sultan (Kolok) of Gaoui

Sultan Hassana Abdoulaye Mahamat is the current sultan /kolok of Gaoui. He is also known as sultan of Sao or Sultan of Sao Gaoui.

 Gaoui is said to have been the capital of the Sao civilisation (a race of giants in local folklore) and is now known for its traditional architecture and pottery manufacture. It is also home to a museum.

Sultan of Dar Tama

Sultan Ahmat Taha Mahamat Abdoulaye is the 30th sultan of Tama or Dar Tama, Tama people of Chad. He was crowned in 2021.

Sultan of Dar Sila

Sultan Moustapha Seid Ibrahim aged 33 in 2021 is the current sultan of Dar Sila since August 2021. He succeeds his late father Sultan Seïd Brahim Moustapha, who died on July 4, 2021 in Egypt.

Sila or Dar Sila is a sultanate of the Sila people of Chad and Sudan.

Sultan of Dar Zaghawa Kobe

Sultan Tahir Abdramane haggar of Zaghawa Kobe , who hails from the Kobe subgroup is head monarch of all Zaghawa in Chad. He is also known as Sultan dar Kobe/Koube

Zaghawa / Zakawa or Beri are an ethnic group in Chad and Sudan, they dominate Chad politics and government. They are subdivided into many subgroups like Zaghawa Kobe, Zaghawa Touer, Zaghawa Douroung, Zaghawa Bilié, Zaghawa Borogate.

  • Kobe: all of the Chadian Zaghawa were united under a single “Kobe” sultanate by French colonization, which caused the creation of two dissident sultanates on the Sudanese side of the border (the Kobe sultanate of Tina-Sudan and the Kabka sultanate of Tundubay.)
  • Wogi are divided into six chiefdoms: Dar Gala (Kornoy), Dar Tuer (Um Buru), Muzbat (independent from Dar Tuer since 1995), Dar Artaj (Um Haraz), Dar Sueini (Dor), Dar Beire (Hashaba). 
  • Bideyat were traditionally divided into approximately fifty independent chiefdoms corresponding to clans. The French united them in two chiefdoms, the Bilia and the Borogat. Idriss Déby, a Bilia, maintained the unity of his chiefdom through his brother Timan, who was named sultan, while dividing the Borogat into multiple clan chiefdoms.

Sultan of Dar Kapka

Sultan Mahamat Ali Abdoulaye is the current sultan of Dar Kapka since 2019.

Dar Kapka is located in War Fida province and is part of the Zaghawa tribe

Sultan of Dar-Bilia

Sultan Sidick Timan Déby is the current Sultan of Dar Bilia since 2019. He is the son of late Sultan Timane Deby Itno and nephew of late President Idris Deby of Chad.

Bilia are of the Bideyat subgroup of the Zaghawa tribe. Bideyat were traditionally divided into approximately fifty independent chiefdoms corresponding to clans. The French united them in two chiefdoms, the Bilia and the Borogat. Late president Idris Déby, a Bilia, maintained the unity of his chiefdom through his brother Timane, who was named sultan, while dividing the Borogat into multiple clan chiefdoms.

Sultan of Sarh

Sultan Mahamat Moussa Bezo is the current reigning sultan of Sarh since being appointed by the ministry of territorial affairs in 2016. His appointment brought alot of chaos from majority christians who felt a muslim sultan had been imposed over them.

Sarh is the third largest town in Chad, named after the Sara people. The Sara are also the largest tribe in Chad.
