Traditional Kings and Chiefs of Zambia

The Government of Zambia recognizes 4 Paramount chiefs, 43 Senior chiefs and 241 Chiefs. Their royal titles differ with the four most senior ones being called Kings or Paramount chiefs. Traditional entities are recognized by Government with representatives seating in the House of Chiefs under the constitution. Membership is 50 members from the 10 provinces (each province ,5 chiefs). The Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs (MOCTA ) is responsible for overall policy, planning, effective coordination and implementation of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, Traditional Affairs programes in Zambia.


Litunga of the Kingdom of Barotseland /Lozi people

Lozi are a bantu ethnic group majorly found in Zambia consisiting of around 46 ethnic tribes now considered one. They also assimilated the Makololo tribe and now speak the siLozi language which is close to the sesotho language. They have been organized into a monarchy called Kingdom of Barotseland/Kingdom of Lozi since 1500.

HM Litunga (King) Lubosi Imwiko II current reigning monarch of Barotseland kingdom or Lozi people of Zambia. He has been King since 2000. He is the surviving son of late King Imwiko I who reigned from 1945-1948. He was married to late Princess Mulako who held the title Muoyo Muamba. She died in 2014. His sister Princess Mbuyu Imwiko holds the title HRH Litunga la mboela Mulena Mukwae and is incharge of Nalolo and Senanga districts. There is an on-going tradition for reigning Litunga to have female rulers in the satellite areas to proactively thwart any Coup d’états usually associated with male subordinate rulers.

He is the custodian of the kuomboka ceremony in which he moves during the rainy season from the lealui palace located at lower grounds to the limulunga royal palace located on higher grounds through the zambezi river in boats. This ceremony is witnessed by the people.


Kalonga Gawa Undi of Chewa people

Chewa people are bantu ethnic group currently found in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. They are around 9.8 million in total population and are also known as Nyanja speaking ChiChewa langauage. They are a matrilineal society with women being producers of the lineage. The have been organised into a monarchy called Chewa Kingdom since 1480s with the Kings and nobility from the Phiri clan and healers from the Banda clan

HM King Kalonga Gawa Undi XI of Chewa kingdom of Chewa people of Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. He is sometimes referred to as paramount chief a title used wrongly by the colonial british. He reigns over all Chewa people in these countries and has subordinate chiefs – 42 in Zambia, 33 in Mozambique and 137 in Malawi.

He is the custodian of the famous Kulamba ceremony, a huge annul August ceremony whereby all the chewa subordinate chiefs in the three countries come to the kingdom headquarters at Mkaika to pay allegiance to the King and inform him of the happenings at their levels of jurisdiction. It also celebrates the history of chewa people and was banned innthe colonial period by Christian British who saw it as a pagan culture. The ceremony has existed from 15th century to date.


Mwata Kazembe of Kazembe Lunda kingdom/people

Kazembe Lunda is a monarchy of the Lunda people of Zambia since 1700s being descendants of the Lunda empire of Congo. Kazembe kingdom was at the helm of precolonial trade with the arab and swahili traders and was mentioned by David Livingstone.

Mwata Kazembe XIX (Paramount Chief) Paul Mpemba Kanyembo of Kazembe Lunda kingdom, Zambia is the 19th monarch of the Lunda speaking people of Kazembe kingdom, luapela province, Zambia and was chosen king in 1998 at the age of 36. His father was the 17th Mwata. He is married to Ema Kapika Kaniembo from Chisenga island in the Democratic Republic of Congo which Mwata appoints its chief and controls with six children, two sons and two daughters. Mwata Kazembe as the king has senior chiefs under him, and subordinate chiefs and village headmen under them. The Senior Chiefs are Lukwesa, Kashiba, Kambwali and Kanyembo.

He is the custodian of the Umutomboko annual ceremony. It includes dances symbolising the migration of the Luba-Lunda and the conquest of the Luapula valley by the first chiefs and attracts tourists and lunda people from all over.

Inkosi ya makhosi Mpezeni of Ngoni people

Ngoni people of Zambia are descendants Zwangendaba,a Jele Ndwandwe prince who servedas a military general under King Shaka Zulu of Zulu, ASouth Africa. He fled the mfecane shaka zulu war in South Africa with some followers and settled in Malawi to form the Jele Ngoni people. Later the part of the group left for Zambia in the 1830s. Today they are found in Chipata, Eastern Province

Inkosi ya makhosi Mpezeni IV Njengembaso David Jere of Ngoni people of Zambia. He has been monarch since 1981 after suceeding his father Inkosi Khuzwayo Pontino Mpezeni III at Ependukeni Palace. Under him are 13 amakhosi like iNkosi ‘Gogo’ Manzamabi of eMthenguleni isigodi who is found in the Western side, Southern part there is iNkosi Zamani of eMfumbeni, iNkosi Fongozana (Chinyaku) of Ndina Isigodi etc. He has been married twice, his first wife Rosinyanga Jere died in 2009 and he remarried in 2015 to Esther Mbewe


He leads the ngoni people every year to celebrate Ncwala ceremony. The Nc’wala is a thanksgiving ceremony held every year at Mtenguleni village for the first harvests of the season. The day before the ceremony, the Inkhosi Yamakhosi Mpezeni IV travels from his palace in a slow convoy of warriors to the Mtenguleni where the ceremony is held.


Chitimukulu of Bemba people

Bemba people are a bantu ethnic numbering around 4 million in Zambia and Congo. They are predominanlty found in Northern and Muchinga provinces. All bemba kings belong to the crocodile or Bena Ng’andu clan hence the king wears crocodile skin in most royal functions.

8th Chitimukulu (King or Paramount Chief ) Kanyanta-Manga II Henry Sosola of Bemba people of Zambia, succeeded his late predecessor in 2013 and crowned in 2015.

He is the custodian of the Ukusefya pa Ngwena or festival of the crocodile in which the Bemba people of Zambia  enact their migration from angola to present homeland Zambia. The King is carried in a crocodile shaped pallaquin at the ceremony.


Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II of Soli People

Soli people are one of the 72 offcial recognised ethnic groups in Zambia. They are the original inhabitanats of Lusaka.

HRH Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II Elizabeth Mulenje of Soli people of chongwe district, Zambia. Most powerful female royal traditional leader in Zambia. She has been monarch since 1976 and served as minister of home affairs from 1979 to 1986. In 2013 she became the first female chairperson of the house of chiefs of Zambia.

Chieftainess Nkomeshya is the custodian of the Chakwela Makumbi ceremony (pulling down the clouds) in which she plays the role of the rainmaker. She is the second nkomeshya since the 19th century. She pleads with the ancestors for rain and plants the first seed for the growing season. She is a known advocate for ending child marriages. She is the only Chief in Zambia who can attend Burial and funerals


Senior Chief/Lion King Mukuni of Leya people

HRH Senior Chief/Lion King Munokalya Mupotola IV Siloka III Mukuni of Leya people of Livingstone, Zambia. He is the 19th monarch of the mukuni dynasty and holds the title Lion King of Victoria falls as the custodian and was selected to the throne after the death of former chief. The mukuni royal palace is located in the Victoria falls region. He rules alongside his royal sister, cousin or female relative who is known as Bedyango. Her role similar to queen mother is land, military and priestly rituals while the lion king is political and administration.

The businessman is the Tourism brain behind Mukuni big five which offers walks and interaction and with cheetahs, lions and elephants. He is also the brain behind mukuni royal trust that  has investments in hotels along the zambezi river and Victoria falls  region. The chief presides three annual ceremonies: Lwindii Ceremony, Lwindii lwa Basilombelombe /ceremony of the spray of vctoria falls and BeneMukuni ceremony


Senior Chieftainess Malembeka of Lamba people, Mpongwe District, Zambia

HRH Chieftainess Malembeka of the Lamba people, bulima, Mpongwe District, Zambia. She is one of the 25 chiefs of Lamba people of Zambia and DRC Congo and one of the four only women chiefs.

She is the custodian of the Kwilimuna annual ceremony celebrated by her people.


Chieftainess Nawaitwika IV of Namwanga people, Nakonde District

Namwanga people of Nakonde , Zambia are led by a traditional monarch called Nawaitwika. She is always a woman as per tradition since the olden days, selected by the Paramount chief of Namwanga people who resides in Tanzania. History by Namwanga people narrates that the sister of the paramount chief was given the chieftancy after colonial borders separated them into two countries. Other chiefs are Kafwimbi, Muyombe, and Mwenechifungwe.

Chief Monze of Tonga people of Monze district

HRH Chief Magunza Monze of the Tonga people of Monze district, Southern Zambia is the monarch since 1990 leading the Tonga people of southern Zambia who have had an existing monarchy since 1700s. The Monze town is named after the chiefs who have been in existence since 1700s

The chief is custodian of the Lwindii Gonde festival which appeases the gods for a good Rain season and harvests. It usually is held at the Chief’s palace at Gonde, Monze town
