Kings of Mossi people

Mossi people are the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso making up 51 percent of the total population. They were organised into five kingdom all which originated from the first kingdom Tenkodogo. The kings of these kingdoms exist today largely as cultural royal and traditional leaders.

1. Mogho Naba(King) of Ouagadougou kingdom

Ouagadougou (Wadagou) is today the capital city of Burkina Faso. It is today the most prominent of all the Mossi kingdoms and it’s King the most influential. Mogho Naba was the title of the King which means King of the world. The current King (Mogho Naba) is Baongo II. He has been the 37th monarch since 1982. He won the 2017 Macky Sall Prize for Dialogue in Africa, which is named after the president of Senegal due to his role in resolving serious crises that have rocked Burkina Faso and played a key role in brokering the return of civilian rule to the country after the military coup in 2015

2. King (Naaba) of Boussouma kingdom

Boussouma is another kingdom of the Mossi people of Burkina Faso. It’s current 32nd King is Naaba Sigri Donald Karim Ouedraogo who succeeded his late father Naaba Sonre in 2019. His father had reigned for 44 years and was an elected officer. Naaba Sigri is also an elected officer of Sanmatanga province which covers the same area and size as his kingdom.

3. Dima of Zougrantenga/Tenkodogo kingdom

Tenkodogo kingdom (also called Zungran Tinga or zougrantenga) is the father or source of all the other Mossi kingdoms. The King is usually called Dima of Zougrantenga. Its current 29th King is Naba Guiguem Polle (Djiguampole) who has been monarch since 2016.

4. Naaba (King) of Yatenga

Yatenga is a kingdom of the Mossi people. The king is also addressed as king of Ouahigouya, its capital and largest town. The current King or Naba is Naaba Kiiba

4. King of Fada Ng’ourma kingdom

Fada Ng’ourma kingdom also sometimes called Gulmu is another kingdom of the Mossi people of Burkina Faso. Currently it should have a 32nd King but there have been two factions.


King of Diébougou

Quattara Sié Félix is the King of Diébougou, Bougouriba in Burkina Farso. Diébougou is a town in Burkina Faso, situated 136 kilometres (85 mi) south-east of Bobo-Dioulasso on the main highway to Ghana. It is located 74 kilometres north of Gaoua and 133 km west of Leo, Burkina Faso and is the capital of Bougouriba Province.

King of Banfora, Komoé, Burkina Faso

Héma Yoyé is the King of Banfora, he was born in1945 and enthroned in 2003. Banfora is a city in south western Burkina Faso, with a population of 117,452 (2019 census) making it the sixth most populous city in Burkina Faso. It is the capital of the Comoe province.

Djamanatigui (King) of Bobo-Dioulasso (Chefferie de canton Bobo Dioulasso)

Djamanatigui (King) Sidiki Sanou is the reigning King of Bobo Dioulasso region and Bobo Mandare people. He was enthroned in 2007 and is commonly refereed to as Chef de canton Bobo Dioulasso(french)

Bobo-Dioulasso is a city in Burkina Faso with a population of 904,920 (as of 2019);[1] it is the second-largest city in the country, after Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital. The name means “home of the Bobo-Dioula. The town has the mausoleum of Guimbi Ouattara, a notable ruler of Bobo-Dioulasso in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
